Then people ask me why I love Dreamworks a bit more than Disney.
I hate getting into these “wars” because most of the time they stem from immaturity, and I don’t even tend to compare the Disney females to the DreamWorks ones. I just don’t like animators being lazy/sloppy when it comes to their work, and that is exactly what Disney is doing here.
I know they’re not as experienced with CGI technology as DreamWorks and Pixar animators, but that is really no excuse for this kind of thing. They are literally taking the same model (the one they used in Tangled) and making very few tweaks to it. Actually, Honey Lemon seems to have as little amount of tweaking from the Rapunzel design as possible (Supposedly it’s not her final design, but that’s what they said about Anna and Elsa, and yet here we are).
You can jump through hoops and defend them all you want (though if the characters looked different enough, you wouldn’t have to go through so much trouble). All that it is doing is assuring Disney it’s okay to use the same model over and over again for their white female leads (GoGo Tomago at least seems to have a unique look), while still using unique models for the males.
Disney animation is a successful 90+ year old company. They are not in danger of going bankrupt anytime soon, they can take some risks (which several younger companies have been doing for years). I think that we can encourage them to experiment with their character models some more, rather than babying them saying “It’s okay,” when clearly it’s not.
